Age UK South Cumbria

Age UK South Cumbria has recently combined Age UK Barrow and District with Age UK South Lakes, and continues to be dedicated to supporting older people across South Cumbria. They are a vital part of the community, offering advice on welfare benefits, grants, blue badges and general support and guidance as well as assistance, companionship and a wide range of activities to enhance the lives of older residents. Their team is passionate about making a difference, along with volunteers who generously donate their time and energy to help deliver their services.

You can find their centre conveniently located at College House on Howard Street, where they coordinate their services and are able to provide face-to-face advice and support as needed. They operate a charity shop on Wilkie Road in Barrow-in-Furness, where you can browse for bargains while supporting a great cause.

Opening times are Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm for the office and Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 4:00pm for the Shop.

As charity, they rely heavily on donations from the public, income generated from our charity shops, and the charitable grants they receive. Every contribution helps them to support the older population in our area.

Part of their service provision is to offer a variety of social groups and activities designed to cater to different interests and abilities. These groups provide a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, engage in stimulating activities and enjoy a sense of community. From Knit and Natter groups to art sessions, and even festive outings like trips to the pantomime at Christmas, there’s something for everyone. Social Engagement Officers are always on hand to offer a warm welcome to new members.

Physical activity is also a key focus at Age UK South Cumbria. They understand the importance of staying active as we age, so they have a schedule of gentle exercise sessions. These include Strength and Stability classes and other exercises that promote strength, core stability, and overall fitness in a relaxed and supportive environment. We have Walking Football, Barrow Social Hub, Dalton Games Hub, Active Coffee with chair-based exercises and much more.

They have recently had a trip to the Kepplewray Centre for Canoeing on Coniston Water, Abseiling down Donkey Rock at Broughton and Archery Lesson at the Centre, and we have coming up a Grand Day out with Stagecoach.

They have an 'Other Help at Home' Register, useful contacts for clients in need of e.g. Gardener, Cleaner, Chiropodist, Home Care etc.
