Barrow & District Disability Association

The Barrow & District Disability Association (BDDA) is a well-established charity in Barrow-in-Furness, dedicated to supporting people with disabilities and their families. Founded over 40 years ago, BDDA has grown into a vital community resource, offering a wide range of services tailored to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. The organisation provides expert advice on disability benefits, helping individuals navigate complex systems to secure the support they need. BDDA also runs community learning programmes, enabling members to acquire new skills, enhance their knowledge, and foster independence.

One of BDDA's standout features is its wheelchair loan service, alongside providing a range of mobility aids to those in need. These solutions help individuals maintain their independence and improve their quality of life by offering temporary wheelchair loans and access to various assistive devices. Additionally, BDDA actively advocates for better disability access in public spaces, ensuring the local community is inclusive and accessible to all.

BBDA's Disability Benefit Advice and Support (DABS) service provides expert help with benefit eligibility, form filling, and advocacy. They also assist with Blue Badge applications, as well as general advice and signposting. In addition, they provide wheelchair and mobility aid hire for a refundable deposit, and sell Radar Keys and other disability aids at reception.

BDDA is also a hub for social interaction, offering a variety of social activities and events that bring people together, reducing isolation, and building a sense of community. These activities range from coffee mornings to special events, all designed to provide a supportive and welcoming environment.

The centre also runs The Willow Tree Community Café, offering freshly cooked food and beverages.

Volunteering is another key aspect of BDDA’s mission. The organisation offers numerous opportunities for people to get involved, whether they are looking to give back to the community or gain valuable experience in the disability sector.

Barrow & District Disability Association is a cornerstone of support for individuals with disabilities in the Barrow-in-Furness area, advocating for their rights, providing essential services, and fostering a strong, inclusive community.
