Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS)

DMWS is a registered charity providing practical and emotional support to the Armed Forces community since 1943.

Mark Kenny is the newly appointed DMWS Welfare Officer based within the Furness General Hospital discharge team. His role is to ensure that all serving personnel, veterans, and their immediate family members receive the dedicated welfare support they need during their hospital stay and as they prepare for discharge.

The service is entirely confidential and person-centred. The support on offer includes, but is not limited to:

  • Emotional and Practical Support: Providing a listening ear and addressing immediate anxieties related to the patient's condition or hospital stay.
  • Liaison and Communication: Acting as a link between the patient, their family, and the clinical team to ensure clear communication and understanding.
  • Discharge Planning Assistance: Working with the discharge team to ensure smooth transitions from hospital to home, coordinating follow-up support with other military charities and community services.
  • Resolving Concerns: Helping patients overcome welfare-related challenges that might impact their recovery or discharge plan (e.g., housing concerns, financial worries, transport issues).
  • Referrals: Signposting to specialist services, such as mental health support like Op COURAGE or financial advice from organisations like the Armed Forces Covenant Trust.
