The St Mary’s Hospice Community Hub, located at 299–301 Duke Street in Barrow-in-Furness, serves as a welcoming space for individuals living with long-term or life-limiting illnesses. It offers a variety of activities and support services aimed at promoting independence and well-being. The hub is open to patients and their families dealing with conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, neurological disorders, dementia, or cancer. Visitors can engage in group activities, enjoy a cup of tea, and connect with others facing similar challenges. Some groups are open for drop-in visits, while others may require a referral from a healthcare professional or the Compassionate Communities Team.
The hub is an integral part of St Mary’s Hospice’s broader Compassionate Communities initiative, which aims to empower individuals and communities to engage in conversations about death, dying and grief. This approach encourages community involvement in providing support alongside formal hospice services. The initiative includes community education programmess, workshops and events designed to raise awareness and foster connections among individuals, families, and organisations.
In addition to its support services, the hub offers room rentals to third-sector organizations working with individuals with long-term conditions. The Hindpool room is available for meetings or training sessions.
